Online Session on Resource Allocation for Child Rights in Budget

 

Islamabad -27 June 2020: Society for Protection of Rights of the Child (SPARC) organized an online “Post-Budget Session to analyze the Resources Allocated for the Protection and Promotion of Child Rights” on Saturday, June 27, 2020. Child Rights Activists demanded the Federal and Provincial governments to increase resource allocations to improve the status of child rights in Pakistan.

 



Key Messages:

  • Pakistan’s present as well as future depends on the survival, protection and promotion rights, and development of its children, who constitute the majority of our population.

  • In budget, there should be special allocation for child health and nutrition.

  • Pakistan must deliver on its commitment of providing free and quality education to every child according to article 25-A of constitution.

  • Adequate budget should be allotted to convert primary schools in to middle and secondary schools to curb down the drop-out-ratio of children.

  • Alarming rate of cases of abuse surfacing against child domestic workers is a matter of great concern.

  • There should be complete ban on hiring children as domestic help.

  • Adequate budget should be allotted to monitor and counter child trafficking.

  • Policy makers must consider the effects of COVID-19 pandemic in resource allocation for child rights, the very survival of our children will be at stake.

  • Our children are not our future. They are our present – here and now.

Learnings:


Following learnings have been achieved by organizing this session:

  1. This session provided proved an effective way to engage civil society media during the lockdown situation.
  2. The session went on for 90 minutes which was 30 minutes more than the scheduled time. Many participants left after the hour mark due to their other commitments. Forfuture sessions, timing should be kept in consideration to ensure that all participants stay till the end.
